BIOGRAPHY

Open Reel Ensemble is a music group which plays old reel-to-reel tape recorders as musical instruments.
They are delusional about the ”Magnetikpunk world” where magnetic technology has developed beyond the realm of reality, and play reel-to-reel tape recorders as “magnetic folklore instruments."
The group’s unique playing techniques and sounds were praised highly, and their first album was released on a label led by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
They played the music for ISSEY MIYAKE's Paris collection for four seasons.
They perform live not only in Japan but also abroad, and have appeared at festivals such as Sónar Festival (Barcelona, Spain) and Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria).
They have collaborated with various artists including Matsuo Ohno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yukihiro Takahashi, Gota Yashiki, Etsuko Yakushimaru, Shugo Tokumaru, Tavito Nanao, and Kaela Kimura.
In recent years, they often join as mysterious reel players on live stages of ZUTOMAYO.
In 2023, they released their work "MAGNETIZE" on Bandcamp as an audio tracks and e-book.
The music video covered with reels and tape attracted attention.
They continue to explore new possibilities of reel-to-reel tape recorders, sometimes changing their forms and configurations.

和田永・吉田悠・吉田匡による、オープンリール式テープレコーダーを楽器として演奏する音楽グループ。
磁気テクノロジーが現実の有様を超えて発展したマグネティックパンク世界を妄想し、
オープンリールを「磁気民族楽器」と解釈し、演奏を繰り広げる。
その独特の奏法や音色、楽曲性は高く評価され、坂本龍一氏主宰のレーベルよりファーストアルバムをリリース。

ISSEY MIYAKEのパリ・ コレクションでは音楽を4シーズンに渡って担当した。

日本を拠点に海外でもライブ・パフォーマンスを展開し、これまでにSónar Festival (スペイン・バルセロナ )、Ars Electronica (オーストリア・リンツ) にも出演している。
これまでに大野松雄、坂本龍一、高橋幸宏、屋敷豪太、やくしまるえつこ、
トクマルシューゴ、七尾旅人、木村カエラをはじめとする様々なアーティストとのコラボレーションも行っている。

近年は「ずっと真夜中でいいのに。」のライブステージにおいて謎のオープンリール奏者として度々参加している。

2023年には音源と電子書籍によるデジタル作品 ”MAGNETIZE” をBandcampにてリリース。併せて公開された、オープンリールとテープだらけのMusic Videoが話題を呼んだ。
時には形態や編成も変化しながら日々新たな可能性を模索し、活動を続けている。
